News & Insights: National insurance changes
what it means for businessThe recent UK budget announcement introducing changes to Employer National Insurance Contributions (NICs) is set to significantly impact industries nationwide. Among the hardest hit will be the hospitality and catering sector, where businesses already contend with tight margins, rising costs, and a competitive labour market.
From 6th April 2025, the following key changes will take effect:
-
Increased Contributions: The employer NIC rate will rise from 13.8% to 15%.
-
Lower Threshold: Employers will now pay NICs on earnings above £5,000 per annum, down from £9,100.
These changes represent a substantial increase in employment costs, forcing hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality businesses to reevaluate their budgets and strategies.
A Limited Relief for Small Businesses
To offset rising NICs, the Employment Allowance will increase, allowing all employers to claim it, with the maximum savings rising from £5,000 to £10,500. However, this adjustment is likely to benefit only the smallest businesses—those with fewer than four employees—leaving many in the hospitality sector still facing a significant financial challenge.
What This Means for the Hospitality Sector
The hospitality industry, already recovering from challenges like post-pandemic labour shortages and rising energy prices, will feel these changes keenly. For many businesses, this additional cost burden may feel like a step back at a time when forward momentum is critical.
However, understanding the implications and planning ahead can make a difference. Here’s what you can do:
-
Assess the Financial Impact Utilize online NIC calculators or consult your accountant to determine how much your employment costs will increase. This insight is crucial for developing a tailored response.
-
Consider Strategic Adjustments Once you know the numbers, you can explore strategies to mitigate the impact:
-
Leverage Employment Allowance Where Possible If your business qualifies for the expanded Employment Allowance, be sure to claim it to minimize the impact.
