Simpler Recycling in England: What Businesses Need to Know in 2025Simpler Recycling in England: What Businesses Need to Know in 2025
As of 31 March 2025, the UK government has introduced the Simpler Recycling legislation, aiming to standardise waste management practices across England. This initiative mandates that all businesses and non-domestic premises with 10 or more full-time employees must separate recyclable materials from general waste. Smaller businesses, with fewer than 10 employees, are required to comply by 31 March 2027.
Key Requirements:
-
Dry Recyclable Materials: Businesses must segregate plastics, metals, glass, paper, and cardboard.
-
Food Waste: Any food waste generated, regardless of volume, must be collected separately.
-
Residual (General) Waste: Non-recyclable waste should be disposed of separately from recyclables and food waste.
This legislation applies to various sectors, including offices, retail, hospitality, education, healthcare, and more. The goal is to enhance recycling rates, reduce landfill dependency, and promote environmental sustainability.
Action Steps for Businesses:
-
Assess Waste Generation: Evaluate the types and volumes of waste your business produces to determine necessary segregation measures
-
Implement Separation Systems: Establish clearly labelled bins for each waste stream—dry recyclables, food waste, and general waste.
-
Engage Waste Collection Services: Coordinate with waste management providers to ensure compliant collection and processing of segregated waste.
-
Educate Staff: Train employees on the importance of waste separation and the specifics of the new system to ensure adherence.
Non-compliance may result in enforcement actions, including compliance notices from the Environment Agency. GOV.UK
By proactively adopting these practices, businesses not only comply with legal obligations but also contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible community.
